The United States could be playing a bigger role in Libya and will be "decisive" in stabilising the war-wracked country, Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Thursday.
Italy has strenuously engaged in talks with the US, "one of the actors that can influence events in Libya" Di Maio told a joint session of the Italian Senate's foreign affairs and defence committees.
"The US could play a greater role at this current time and will in my view determine Libya's future because it will be crucial in convincing international actors to push for a real ceasefire an a political process."
Di Maio was briefing committee members on the 19 January Libyan peace summit in Berlin.
At the Berlin summit, world powers backed a fragile truce agreed between rival militias on 12 January, urged an end to regional meddling in Libya and vowed to uphold the UN arms embargo.
