Libya's airports authority has awarded the construction of a new integrated air traffic control tower at Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport to an Italian company, according to local media.

The contract has reportedly been awarded to Italy's state-owned air traffic services company ENAV’s logistics and maintenance arm Techno Sky.

The Libyan Observer website on Monday quoted state-run LANA news agency as saying the new state-of the-art air traffic control tower is expected to take eight months to build.

Mitiga, a military and civilian airport, is located around eight kilometres east of central Tripoli.

The airport was built in 1923 by the Italian Air Force as Mellaha Air Base and was used by the German Luftwaffe during the World War II North African Campaign. Mitiga was used as a base for US bombing raids of Italy and southern Germany after the airport's capture by the British army in 1943.
