Only Italians will be able to receive the populist government's 'basic citizen's income or wage, deputy prime minister and labour and industry minister Luigi Di Maio told Radio Anch'io on Friday.
"It's logical that it has to be limited to Italians," Di Maio said.
"Clearly, it will be impossible not to restrict the citizen's wage to Italian citizens, given the influx of illegal migrants," said Di Maio, who leads the grassroots Five-Star Movement.
Seemingly, jobless European Union citizens living in Italy would be not be eligible for the citizen's income either under the government's plans.
A basic citizens wage of 700-800 euros a month for the poorest citizens was the Five-Star Movement's key electoral pledge and Di Maio is pushing for the measure to be introduced in the budget.
